You'll never be fully in charge of your life...

until you understand what's actually driving you.

For years, I dreaded Mondays.

Not the vague, back-to-work kind of dread. The stomach-drop kind.

Because Monday meant another week in the same room as someone who made my working life a misery. Someone who would sing my praises in public and ignore me in the office. Or insist on calling me ‘Boss’ then refuse to do anything I asked. Smiling all the while.

The strange part? Nobody else seemed to be struggling.

Everyone around me knew his ‘funny’ ways... and just got on with it. While I shrank a little more each week. Talking less in meetings. Second-guessing decisions I'd have made in a heartbeat a year earlier. Taking on more because I couldn’t trust him.

And underneath it all, one question on a loop:

What is wrong with me?

Your version might not be a colleague. It might be a boss. A friend. A family member. A job that looks fine on paper but leaves you hollow.

But you know the feeling. Everyone else seems to be coping. And you're quietly coming apart.

Why?

Nothing was wrong with me.

And nothing is wrong with you.

What winds you up, what wounds you, what keeps you awake at night - it isn't random. And it isn't the same for everyone. That's why the people around you seem fine.

It comes down to your core values. The handful of deep, personal drivers you've carried since childhood.

When life lines up with them, you feel steady. Energised. Yourself.

When something tramples them, day after day... the self-doubt and second-guessing sets in.

The day I finally understood this, everything made sense.

The person making my life miserable wasn't just difficult. Almost every time he opened his mouth, he was trampling my deepest value. Honesty.

You see, the full meaning of honesty for me is more than just telling the truth. It’s being heard, feeling safe, having meaning, being open, feeling warmth, doing things right, creating fairness – all things that disappeared when I set foot in that office.

I wasn't weak. I wasn't too sensitive. My values were being violated, daily - and I didn't have the map to see it.

That's what core values do. They drive your decisions. They decide where you thrive and where you struggle. Who energises you and who exhausts you.

And if you don't know what's driving you, something else is.

Something feels off? Let's find out what.

You might be thinking: 'But I already know my values. I've done all the exercises.'

Most of us have picked words from a list. Words we like. Words that sound right.

That's not the same as knowing them.

Your core values weren't chosen. They were imprinted - in childhood, through the moments and stories that shaped you, long before you could name them.

Which is why your particular set is completely unique to you.

Press your finger on a piece of glass and you'll leave a mark.

You don't have to try.

You might not see it straight away... but it's there.

Your values work in exactly the same way.

You leave them on everything:

  • Your decisions

  • Your leadership

  • Your relationships

Together, they form your Values Fingerprint®.

'But I can't change my boss. Or my team. Or him. Or her.'

Maybe not. You don't have to.

There are two sides to every situation that's draining you - and one of them is yours.

When you can read your own Fingerprint, you stop asking 'what's wrong with me?' and start asking 'which of my values is being stepped on here - and what do I want to do about it?'

Sometimes the answer is a conversation. Sometimes it's a boundary. Sometimes it's the door.

But it's a choice. Made by you, on solid ground - instead of another year of wondering. And shrinking.

Hi, I'm Sarah Evans.

That story above is mine.

I spent twenty-five years in film and TV - from script assistant, to story producer, to creator of screenwriting degree programmes - learning to spot the exact moment a character's true motivation shows itself.

Then a toxic environment taught me, the hard way, that I couldn't read my own.

So I built the process I needed back then.

One that doesn't just name your values.

It proves them. Maps them. And shows you how to use them, in life and work.

Forever.

The science bit

You may have tried other routes.

Talking it through with a friend. A book. A mindset course. A workshop with a list of lofty words and twenty minutes of reflection.

Some of it helps, for a while. But none of it explains the mechanism - why the same situations keep triggering you, and what actually makes that stop.

Your brain's first job is to keep you safe.

When something feels wrong and you can't say why, your internal alarm system stays on - scanning, bracing, replaying.

That's the 2am loop we get stuck in.

It isn't the situation that keeps it running.

It's the not knowing why.

And there's a well-evidenced way to turn it off.

Brain-imaging research shows that accurately naming what's happening inside you measurably calms the brain's alarm response. Psychologists call it affect labelling. The catch? It only works if the name is accurate.

'I'm fine, I'm just tired' calms nothing. Your brain knows it isn't the whole truth.

'My value of honesty is being stepped on here' - that works.

Because now your brain has the real reason. And a brain with a reason stops fighting you.

Which is why this process doesn't simply hand you words off a list.

It builds your five core values from the evidence of your own life - the stories and moments that prove them. Your brain accepts what it can prove.

That's what makes it hold under pressure, and why a poster on the wall does nothing.

That map of evidence is your Values Fingerprint®.

And each time you name the value instead of blaming yourself, you strengthen the response - until reading your own signals becomes automatic.

Like a path walked so often the grass stops growing back.

Not positive thinking. Not another mindset hack. Just how your brain works - finally working for you.

Wherever you are right now, one thing is certain: when things are changing, core values matter.

They're not abstract ideals. They're your personal GPS.

• They help you make confident decisions, with a deep certainty.

• They guide you toward work that energises you instead of draining you.

• They stop you repeating the same patterns in a new setting.

The story you're living... finally makes sense.

The problem was never you. It's that nobody ever showed you how to read the signals your values have been sending all along.

'I trust myself now'

Trusted by self-leaders like you

"What I've learned about myself is game-changing."

"A deeper understanding of my past and how I react, feel and think in different situations... It gives you the tools to improve how you manage your life experience going forward, to challenge the otherwise negative self-talk. You make empowering decisions to work towards a more balanced, more positive and happier life."

EM, Senior Leader, Charity Sector

"I really, really recommend this workshop."

"If you're wondering why you don't get on with someone, or why certain things trip you up, or why certain things really stress you out... I really, really recommend this workshop. I work in management consultancy, and I work with core values a lot, but I have never come across the incredible intellect, creativity, energy and passion that Sarah uses with her work."

HG, CEO of Compassionate Leaders

"It's like coming home again."

"It's like a personal navigation system. When I feel rocked or lost, I go back to those five main stars in my constellation and find my true north again. At 65, I only wish I'd known this about myself decades ago - so much time wasted giving myself grief.

When you know what you need to navigate the world, so much more is available."

BB, CEO of Mindspark Branding
